I've just tested the Tamron 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 lens on my Canon EOS 7D camera and now I am writing this Tamron 18-250 review to give you the result.
This lens is also available for Nikon (with built in motor), Pentax, and Sony cameras. Tamron also made an upgraded version of this lens, called the 18-270mm VC for Canon and Nikon DSLR.
This lens is an upgraded version of the Tamron 18-200mm lens. If you have read my Tamron 18-200 review previously, you know that I recommend that lens for a budget super zoom lens.
This new lens is a bit different compared to the previous one. The build quality and finish of the lens clearly reflects the update. This lens now feels more solid and sturdy when compared to the old version of this lens.
In terms of optical quality, it seems that they are still sticking to their old 18-200mm formula. I found very minor difference between the two lenses in terms of optical quality.
The zoom ring is updated in this lens. It feels more solid and has a zoom lock mechanism to prevent zoom creep. This makes it easier to transport the lens. Many travel photographers will find this function helpful to have during their vacation.
Just like the old version, I found the autofocus fast but a bit on the noisy side. During the review, I find it hard to photograph discreetly. This might be a bit of a downside if you are into street photography.
Also, the small aperture at the telephoto end makes the autofocus hunt in low light. There is a simple solution for this: switch to manual focus. It will take time to get used to, but it will be worth the effort.
In terms of cost, it is more expensive than the 18-200mm. If you are looking for a budget super zoom lens, the Tamron 18-200mm lens is still the best option.
In terms of optical quality, this lens has low chromatic aberration and vignetting. However, I found the barrel distortion to be rather high. Note that all of those can easily be corrected during post processing using any software.
In conclusion, this lens is fine for general photography and travel photography. This can also be a fun to use lens for any professional photographers to use.
However, keep in mind that this is not a professional lens, so do not expect professional performance from it.
